When Part 107 rules were put into effect in 2016, this ushered in the first-ever commercial use of UAS in the United States. The number and nature of applications to which professionals and enthusiasts have discovered and applied these technologies has been nothing short of astounding. And the growth rate and pace of innovation is still increasing. As with most new technological bursts of innovation, much is lost and gained when practitioners don’t understand the rules, technology, limitations, or business models. The MAPPS session will present a series of discussions from geospatial firms that have been deploying UAS for mapping purposes throughout the country, and in the global market, and will present the good, the bad, and the ugly of real applications of drones for remote sensing and mapping applications.
